Allpahuayo Mishana is not just any jungle.
Varillales grow on white sand soils, a low, thin forest that looks like nothing else in the Amazon. That poor soil ended up producing species that barely exist anywhere else.
That is why the reserve is a compulsory stop for anyone birding in Peru, and why it is worth walking it with someone who can explain what you are looking at.

Getting there
Less than a morning from your hotel.
The reserve begins about 23 kilometres south of Iquitos, along the Nauta road. We pick you up at your hotel, drive there and walk into the white-sand forest. No domestic flight, no two days on the river.

Two understorey antbirds, photographed here.
Of the nearly five hundred bird species recorded in Allpahuayo Mishana, these two turned up on the same day, on the same trail, an hour apart. One of them carries the reserve's name.

It is not a bird you chase; it is a bird you wait for. It stays still in the shade of the understorey, behind a thin trunk, and when it finally leans out the first thing you see is the red eye.

It shares that understorey with the one above, among thin branches and broad leaves. This one is a male: the breast streaked black and white, the back brown, the flanks orange.

Naturamazon Expeditions S.A.C. is a Peruvian company from Loreto dedicated to nature tourism experiences in the Amazon, focused on community-based travel, birdwatching and environmental interpretation aimed at conserving biodiversity.
We work out of Iquitos, inside the rules of the protected natural areas and alongside the people who run them. That formal agreement with the reserve management is, so far, the first of its kind in Allpahuayo Mishana.

Frequently asked questions.
When is the best time to visit?
You can visit all year round. Between December and May the river rises and more of the trip is by boat, with the flooded forest accessible. Between June and November the water drops and more trails open up for walking.
What should I bring?
Light quick drying long sleeved clothing, rubber boots, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, a rain poncho and water. If you watch birds, bring your binoculars. If you have a camera with a telephoto lens, even better.
Where do the expeditions leave from?
From the city of Iquitos. Once the booking is confirmed we agree on the pick up point and time for the experience you chose.
How do I book and how much is the deposit?
A booking is confirmed once you receive our written confirmation and the payment is registered. We ask for a deposit of at least 30% to hold the date, and the balance up to 48 hours before departure. Special programmes, private experiences and high season may require full payment in advance.
What happens if I have to cancel?
More than 7 days ahead we refund up to 80% of what you paid; between 3 and 7 days, up to 50%; with less than 72 hours or a no show there is no refund. If the trip cannot run because of weather, protected area restrictions or force majeure, we reschedule at no cost, issue a credit valid for 6 months, or assess a refund.
Do you take groups, schools and institutions?
Yes. We put together outings for groups, schools, universities and institutions, with interpretation content adapted to the audience.
